Plot Summary:Introduction: An allegorical figure of a woman is seated at a table, head bowed, a figure of abject distress, her manacled hands extended before her, clenched and unclenched in anguish. She raises her head slowly and as she brings her hands together in supplication, the manacles disappear. Synopsis: Lola, a woman of mystery, is seated at a table covered with the debris of a night of revelry. Her position is that of the allegorical figure. Rising, she goes to the window and raises the shade. As she does so, a flood of morning light envelops her and makes her gaudy evening clothes look out of keeping with the bright world she is gazing upon. She decides to live a better life, and taking up a cloak which she wraps around her, she leaves her apartment. Frank, a man of mystery, is seen backing out of a side door of an alley, his hand on his pistol pocket. He quickly mounts a horse and rides hurriedly away. Lola has purchased a small farm in the mountains and is busy in her garden when Frank rides in exhausted, unkempt, and hungry. He asks for work and a night's lodging. Lola brings him food and shows him to a shack. The next morning as Frank is about to leave, Lola asks him if he will not remain and work for her, as the care of the farm has been too much for her. Frank hesitates, but finally agrees to accept. He is curious about a woman of her type, living such a secluded life and day after day, watches her carefully. A keen friendship springs up between them, but no reference to the past is made by either. Lola is set thinking about Frank's past one day finding a portion of a newspaper with his picture on it. Soon after she receives a letter from an old friend asking her to come back to the old life. Lola rushes to her room with the letter clutched to her bosom. Torn by conflicting emotions, she drops into a chair and unconsciously assumes the pose of the allegorical figure. She re-reads the letter and a mad desire to revert to the past seizes her. She dons the evening dress in which she fled from the city and, putting powder and rouge on her face, poses before her mirror, throwing kisses to her reflection. In the meantime Frank goes to Lola's cabin to learn the contents of the letter, cautiously enters the living room and searches for the letter. Lola opens the door of her room and discovers Frank searching in the table drawers. He turns and sees Lola in her rouge and finery. Each is revealed to the other in their true light. Frank approaches her and wipes the rouge from her lips. Lola spurns him, and handing him the letter, tells him to read it. The situation reminds him of his own past and he takes from his pocket and offers to her the newspaper from which the portion has been torn that Lola had found. Without looking at it she takes it and tears it up, Frank hands back the letter without having read it and she tears that up too. Frank then goes out into the orchard and sits under a tree. Lola comes to him, puts her arm about his shoulders and says, \"The past belongs to yesterday and yesterday is dead.\" They stand and face the sunrise of a new day and Frank takes her in his arms.
